Stomach Flu

The stomach flu is also known as Viral Gastroenteritis. I choose this because I always hear of people having a stomach flu, but I never knew why it happened and how it was caused. This relates to what we've been learning because when you get a stomach flu your stomach, small intestine and large intestine lining is inflamed. My only main questions now are how they get inflamed and what is the main cause of the inflammation.

The main symptoms of viral gastroenteritis are

  • watery diarrhea
  • vomiting

Other symptoms include

  • headache
  • fever
  • chills
  • abdominal pain

Symptoms usually appear within 12 to 48 hours after exposure to a gastroenteritis-causing virus and last for 1 to 3 days. Some viruses cause symptoms that last longer.

Heart Disection

Questions:

1. I was most surprised about how all the veins and arteries were weaving by each other and all in close corridors. It felt how I expected it to and was really cold, I was surprised with the amount of ice in the heart as well.
2. They are different because the atria are smaller and just pushing the blood down into the ventricles and in the ventricles it builds up and gets pumped out to where it has to go.
3. It is more muscular because it is getting oxygenized blood and it has to pump the blood out further.
4. The valves are suppose to control the blood flow in the heart and make sure no blood goes back up from where it came from. The structure is very strong because the chordae tendinae were able to provide control of the valves.
5. I have lost my pictures.

Spinal Cord Injuries

It can either be a complete or incomplete injury if it's complete spinal cord injury it can't send signals below the level of the injury. That's when you become paralyzed. If it's incomplete you have some movement and sensation below the injury. Spinal cord injuries are medical emergencies, immediate treatment can reduce long term effects. Some treatments may include medicines, braces or traction to stabilize the spine and surgery. Later treatments usually include medicines and rehabilitation therapy. Most people end up with mobility aids and assistive devices. I chose this injury because I was really interested in finding out what happens to cause someone to be partially or fully paralyzed.

Interview

Biology- I believe that I've learned and caught on to lots of the work in this class and that I understand it well, but I know that I'm not very good at getting the blogs done and staying focused in class. I feel like I would be around the 75% mark for this class.

Exercise Science- This class is very much similar to Biology just the only difference is that I don't feel like I get as much of the in class work sheets done, but I do get more of the blogs done. In this class I feel like I would be around the 78% mark.

Super Fit- For this class I believe that I've done very well and that my fitness has improved a lot, but I still believe I haven't given it my all for some of the fitness testing a and believe that I can do better. Also I have missed some blogs for this class so I believe I would be around the 90% mark for this class.

25 Minute Run

I was able to get 7 laps in in 25 minutes and felt like I could run forever !

Collapsed Lungs

Pneumothorax is what its called when your lung is collapsed.

Definition: Pneumothorax is a collection of air or gas in the chest or pleural space that causes part or all of a lung to collapse.

Descrpition: The pressure in the lungs is greater than the pressure in the pleural space, but when air enters the pleural space the pressure in there becomes greater than in the lungs causing the lung to collapse. It can happen randomly or from trauma, like in car accidents. When it is a spontaneous pneumothorax it is most common to happen to men tall and thin between the ages of 20-40.

Interim Report

Hi Mom and Dad!
This is my interim report for the Human Kinetics Coop.

So far, the highlights for me have been:
Doing the Grouse Grind and doing a good job, in my opinion, on the Blood Flow video.

I am the most proud of:
My time on the Grouse Grind which was 51.04.

The most interesting things I have learned about are:
How are heart rate has a max and  how our body has different energy supplies for different types of workouts.

An example of when I really pushed myself in SuperFit is:
During the Grouse Grind I was trying my best to get the fastest time I could get.

I could make improvements in:
My effort level on getting work done in class and doing on my blog posts on time.

I am really looking forward to:
To more field field trips and fitness testing to try and improve my records like on the beep test.

The Basics - WORK HABITS:

Attendance (classes missed and why) - 0

Participation in field trips (woo kim, grouse grind, rock climbing) - I went to all three and lots of fun!

Lates (how many & reasons) - 0

Preparedness for class (gym strip &/or supplies) - I always have gym strip and my supplies.

Class time management (are you using your class time to complete your work?  engaged in class discussion? participating? following along? doing your best? or talking too much? ) - I can focus more in class, but I participate in everything and follow along all the time. I can try a bit harder and could talk a bit less.

Blog assignment completion - (out of 8 assignments) Comments? I think I might still be missing one and I really need to work on getting them done right away.

Self evaluation of work habits for each class in coop - G/S/N

Biology 12: G
Exercise Science 12: G
Super Fit 12: G

Grouse Grind Post

The Grouse Grind made my legs feel like they were on fire and had big lumps of burning coal in them. It came to a point where my body felt so use to the pain that it didn't hurt anymore like I got immune to it. My heart rate was off the charts, that's what it felt like, and my breaths were really quick. I really enjoyed the Grouse Grind and I would definitely do it again. My exertion level was definitely in level 5.

VO2 Max

My highest ever VO2 has been 57.5 which is really good for my age, the highest I got to on the last beep test was 54.0 which is still good but not my full potential. VO2 Max is the highest point your body can go to and it is your ml/kg/min.

Voyage of a Red Blood Cell

Asad drew the pictures and helped with the script and Clay helped film and I came up with the script and helped with the labeling and different colors.

Why are we blogging ?

Why did you take the co-op?
I took co-op because I felt like the kinetics aspect to it would open up a lot of doors for my future and the courses also interested me a lot and be able to have superfit was another benefit I was excited about.

What are your plans for next year?
Next year I don't quite have a plan yet, but if I find an interest in courses I'll take whatever I get interested in and if I don't find any interests I'll plan on working for a year and just figure out what to do.

What activities do you like to do outside of school?
I like to play sports such as hockey, volleyball and baseball and I love to explore and walk around.

Have you done any fitness activities over the summer?
I have gone to the gym and gone on runs as well as playing baseball over the summer.

What are your fitness goals for the semester?
Just to become more fit and stronger and get higher scores on the fitness testing.

Add any pictures/you tube links/etc., that help you show what you like and who you are.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X9QYfwTuE8

What is important to you & helps to define who you are?
Making everyone happy and being athletic and exploring new things.

Biology - Heart anatomy

STRUCTURE
FUNCTION
DEOXY/OXY BLOOD
LEFT ATRIUM
Takes in oxygen-rich blood back into the heart from the lungs and forces it through the Mitral valve into the Left Ventricle.
Oxy Blood
LEFT VENTRICLE
Pushes the blood through the Aortic valve and out into your body.
Oxy Blood
RIGHT ATRIUM
Collects oxygen-poor blood coming back from the body and forces it through the Tricuspid valve and into the Right Ventricle.
Deoxy Blood
RIGHT VENTRICLE
Takes the oxygen-poor blood and forces it through the Pulmonary Valve into the lungs for oxygen.
Deoxy Blood
PULMONARY ARTERY
Carries blood from the heart to the lungs to pick up oxygen.
Deoxy Blood
AORTA
Carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of your body.
Oxy Blood
PULMONARY VEINS
Carries oxygen-rich blood back from the lungs to the heart.
Oxy Blood
SUPERIOR VENA CAVA
Oxygen-poor blood returning from the upper parts of the body to the heart comes through the Superior Vena Cava.
Deoxy Blood
INFERIOR VENA CAVA
Oxygen-poor blood returning from the lower parts of the body to the heart comes through Inferior Vena Cava.
Deoxy Blood
ATRIOVENTRICULAR VALVES (Mitral & Tricuspid)
They both control blood flow from their respective atriums into their respective ventricles.
Mitral is Oxy Blood and Tricuspid is Deoxy Blood
CHORDAE TENDINAE
Relaxes when blood is flowing from the Atria to the Ventricles and pushes both AV Valves to close simultaneously preventing backflow into the Atria and the flaps attempt to evert to low pressure regions.
Oxy Blood on left side and Deoxy Blood on right side
SEMI LUNAR VALVES (Pulmonary & Aortic)
The Pulmonary Valve controls blood flow into the Pulmonary Arteries from the Right Ventricle and the Aortic Valve controls blood flow into the Aorta from the Left Ventricle.
Pulmonary is Deoxy Blood and Aortic is Oxy Blood
SEPTUM
Separates the Left and Right Atria and the Left and Right Ventricles.
Deoxy Blood and Oxy Blood

Final Assessment Post

Participation - Throughout this semester I've felt like I have put in really high levels of effort even when I'm tired or sore I still try my hardest. Although there have been some days where I've let the tiredness get to me or not been interested in what we were doing. The semester in a whole has felt like one of my best participated PE classes in my life.

Social Responsibility and Contribution to the Class - I feel like I always bring a positive vibe to the class and I always try to help and include everyone in on what we do in our class, fitness days and choice days. When setting up games I try to help out to get it organized faster so we can play. Also, I try my best to make sure everyone is including and playing, not just myself.

Healthy Living - Throughout high school I have became a lot more fit and I have changed some of my bad eating habits and I feel a lot better about myself. Overall my fitness has improved and I've reached almost all of my goals from grade 8 & 9. Now I just wish to set new goals and strive for those becoming as fit as I can be.

Digital Portfolio and Reflective Skills - I have posted most of the required blog posts, but I know I have missed fitness days. I could've done better at posting every fitness day especially since I was happy with my results almost every time during fitness.

I believe I'm at about 92% in PE 11 this semester.

Report Card Post

Action: I have been to every class except for when I have been excused or home sick. Everyday I try to give 100% effort and help set up the games we play. I always try to stand out on block wide fitness days by giving even more effort than usual.

Contribution: I try to help organize and set up activities for our class and block wide choice days. When deciding teams I try to make sure they're even and fair and that everyone is included.

Reflection: I blog every time we are assigned to, but need to blog after every fitness day or try to at least. I believe I put in a great effort and do my best at trying to lead activities. My strengths are being able to motivate myself and others and try hard always, but my weaknesses are being to tired in the morning which makes it harder to get motivated and stopping myself when I could keep going until my max.

I believe my letter grade should be an A.

07/04/2014 PE Update & Dance Week

During dance week I attended every class and participated as much as I could. The first two days, line dancing and zumba, I couldn't participate because the doctor had told me not to be physically active because I had been sick the previous week. After that I participated and tried my best for the three remaining dance classes. Jazz and Hip-hop where my favorite and I felt like I did very well on both those days.

a) My attendence has been really good and I'm always prepared, the only days I have missed are because I have been sick or excused for some other reason. Everyday I give a really good effort, some days more than others depending on my level of tiredness.
b) Everyday I usually have a lot of energy and am able to put in a good effort, but being my first class of the day I'm sometimes tired at the start of class.
c) I always try to be as good at it as possible and if that doesn't make me any happier I will just try and have fun!
d) I can come up with new games to try and help get games set up faster so we can have more time to play.

Interm Report

Interm Report

THE BASICS:
Attendance - I
have only missed two classes, one due to refing in a hockey tournament and the other one due to being really sore after my hockey game the night before.
Did Not Participate (DNP) - I have missed two classes, one being the first day because I was away refing hockey for SFMHA and the other last Thursday because I had hockey the night before and was really sore after and then Thursday morning it was even worse so I decided to stay home from school. Everyday at school I have participated.
No Strip (NS) - I have never forgotten my strip, but I didn't change one day when we were told we were going to watch the women's hockey final for the Olympics.
How have the above most basic parts of coming to PE affected your ability to participate in PE so far this semester? I have been able to participate very well, but some days I am tired and/or sore from hockey the night before causing me to not perform at the best of my abilities.
PARTICIPATION:
How would you rate the intensity of your participation on fitness day?   On regular classes? My intensity is always high especially on fitness days and I always participate and help set up activities.
Provide a specific example of a class (or two) that you are proud of your participation.  Why? On choice days when we went to the upper field and played softball and football a different day, I helped organize and set up and played very well and had a lot of fun.
In what ways could you improve? I could improve by help setting up everyday and trying to push myself even further.
OTHER CONTRIBUTIONS:
What are your best attributes in PE? My effort and performance on choice days.
What type of energy do you bring to class? I try to be as energetic as possible and having fun.
What can you do to make the class better for you and others? Help set up and organize everyone on teams.
